Summary

I plan to do my community service at the Fairborn senior center. I got this idea from my aunt, from her working as a nurse and taking care of my grandmother who passed away. When my aunt worked with my grandma it made her a happier person. When she had to stop coming and helping her out for her job, my grandmother had passed away a short time later. This made me appreciate the time left that seniors had. I believe that seniors should be as happy as possible because any depression or low morale that they have it greatly affects their health.
Senior citizens depend on their families for support and happiness and often times families are too busy or too detached to give seniors the care they need and the companionship they want. Seniors need people to talk with; they worry about their health, their life, and their future. They need something to keep their minds active not allowing them to sit and think negatively. Working with seniors can be rewarding because they appreciate the company and activities.
Seniors have a lot to offer this world. They have a lot of knowledge and experience that they can share with young people like me. I first thought it would be scary to work with older people but when I saw the difference that my aunt made in my grandmother’s life by just interacting with her and finding activities that she like, I knew that it would also make a difference in the lives of other older adults.
I contacted the Fairborn Senior Center to arrange to volunteer and found that there were many different things that I could do. I could just visit rooms and talk with patients, pass out food and drinks, set up games like Bingo or checkers in the activity room, and even take some of the people for walks in wheel chairs around the grounds. I plan to find out who does not get very many visitors and visit with them first, they move on down the hall to visit with the other residents. I am not sure what all activities they would like to do but I can spend time asking them and then get them involved in helping to plan the activities.
My goal in volunteering is to help older people live longer and have a better quality of life. Studies have proven that senior citizens that have weekly interaction with those younger than them help them to have a more positive outlook on life, to take care of themselves better, and to live longer. I also hope to let them know that young people value senior citizens and what they still can offer our world. I want them to know that I value them and what they have given our world. I want them to know that I believe that they are still very valuable because of their knowledge and experiences and can mentor young people who might be struggling with important choices in life.
This is a very important issue to me. I have a lot of respect for the elderly. I have that instilled into me because of what happened to my aunt and I don’t think that would be fair to happen to anyone. I don’t think any older person should have to experience loneliness in the last moments of their lives. They deserve to know that people care what they went through and want to know what their lives were like. That is why I have chosen this for my service learning project.

pattaya celebrated seniors day 8 days early. This is important to my slp because it shows that people do care about people of older age. This is very interesting on how people treat the elderly in other countries. This boosts the morale of seniors and lets the younger people show appreciation to the older people of the society.
